Keeps headphone cable secure and out of the way. Hook bottom of clip onto cable. Then fasten the clip to your shirt, shorts or wherever is convenient.

The clip comes off the headphones constantly and then snaps in half for no reason at all.

Give it a chance
I purchased the QC20's on Cyber Monday of 2016 and it is one of the best I have ever made. Naturally, this clip came with it and despite what the other reviews say it has worked like it is supposed to in my experience. Now, the clip on Bose's SoundSport Pulse earbuds, that's a whole other story! The default clip broke only a few weeks into my purchasing them, and the replacement clip Bose graciously sent me for free broke just yesterday (being a few months later after I treated it ever so delicately this time). That clip is absolute garbage. Being in a pinch and going to the gym, I took the clip off of my QC 20s and put it on the SoundSport Pulse. The SoundSport Pulse's wire was slightly too thin so I took a small piece of duct tape to thicken it up and have had no issues so far. It's just annoying that for such a reputable brand that we have to deal with these small nuisances. If you happen to read this Bose, consider adding a second clip when a customer makes an earbud purchase?
